When working from home, work time seems to fade into downtime. Staring at a computer can feel like a never-ending void. Zoom calls and emails might become overwhelming. Are you feeling like your remote workday is going on and on?

Stop.

Take a break. You deserve it.

You are a leader in your organization. You’re busy making important decisions, taking calls and executing plans. It can be hard to make time for yourself, but you have earned it. Taking a break can be beneficial to your mental and physical wellbeing. Here are some ways you can take 5 while working from home:

Move Around

Give your brain a much needed break and your body the movement it deserves. According to the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, standing up and moving around frequently during a workday can actually increase your life expectancy. Get up from your desk, walk around, stretch or even do a few jumping jacks. It will be good for your mind and body.

Make a Cup of Tea

Pausing to do a simple task like make a cup of tea or coffee can allow you to better focus when you return to work. According to a study from the University of Illinois, working on a single task for an extremely long amount of time can actually hinder your ability to focus. The study showed that even small breaks from a task can drastically improve a person’s performance.

Meditate

Meditation is a great way to clear your mind and reduce stress. An article from the Mayo Clinic states, “Meditation can give you a sense of calm, peace and balance that can benefit both your emotional well-being and your overall health.” If you are feeling overwhelmed, try closing your eyes and focusing on deep breathing for a few minutes.

Eat a Healthy Snack

If you’re feeling a midday lull, try eating a healthy snack! According to Martha Gonzalez, RD, LD, CLC, a healthy snack will help sustain your energy levels. Try munching on carrots and hummus, fruit, yogurt or whole grain to stay energized throughout the day.

Chat with a Friend

Give a co-worker a call or send them a message or email. Socialization at work encourages teamwork and builds relationships. Just because you are not physically with your co-workers does not mean you are alone. Check-in on your colleagues. Take time to catch up and collaborate.

Taking short breaks during the day can benefit you in big ways. When work gets busy or overwhelming it’s okay to pause. It is important to remember to stop and take 5.
